This wonderful town was named after Sir Richard Bellingham who was governor number three of the Massachusetts Bay colony, who was a puritan lawyer. Sir Richard Bellingham was born in England in 1591, he received his education as a lawyer there as well, his name is to the date still preserved in the famous Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne.
Sir Richard Bellingham was one of the twenty six original members who drafted the Charter for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, this was set in place by Puritan leaders in Boston for political and religious refuge. Until they had joined the church and by vote were accepted as free men, settlers in the Boston area were not allowed to become citizens.
